How to Make Unique Eco - friendly Drinkware
by Baruch Okpulor
Creating unique drinkware from coconuts is an eco-friendly and creative process that results in beautiful, natural products. Here's how you can make your own:
Materials Needed:
1. Fresh or dried coconut shells (you can find these at craft stores or online)
2. Saw or cutting tool
3. Sandpaper (coarse and fine)
4. Drill (for making holes for straws or decorations)
5. Natural oils (like coconut or olive oil)
6. Paints or stain (optional for decoration)
7. Sealer (food-safe if intended for drinking)
8. Straw (optional, can be bamboo or stainless steel)
9. Cleaning tools (brush, water, mild soap)
Steps:
1. Prepare the Coconut Shell:
Choose your coconut: Start with a fresh or dried coconut. Fresh coconuts will need to be opened carefully, while dried ones have a more rigid structure, making them easier to handle.
Remove the coconut water: If using a fresh coconut, use a sharp tool to puncture the “eyes” (three black spots) of the coconut and drain the water out. You can save this for drinking or other purposes.
Cut the coconut: Use a saw or cutting tool to carefully cut the coconut in half. You may want to cut it horizontally or vertically depending on the shape and size you want for your drinkware.
2. Clean the Coconut Shell:
Remove the coconut flesh from the inside, using a spoon or scraper. If it’s dried, the flesh should already be removed.
Wash the shell thoroughly with warm water and mild soap to ensure it's clean and free of any residue.
3. Smooth the Edges:
Sand the edges and the surface of the coconut shell using coarse sandpaper. Be careful around the edges to ensure they aren’t sharp.
Follow up with finer sandpaper to smooth the surface and give it a polished look.
4. Add a Handle (Optional):
If you want to create a more traditional cup or mug, you can attach a handle. Use a durable material like wood, metal, or even a twisted coconut fiber rope. Drill holes into the shell and the handle, then fasten them together with natural glue or screws.
5. Decorate (Optional):
You can paint or stain the coconut shell to give it a unique look. Use non-toxic, food-safe paints or stains. You can also carve designs or patterns into the shell for added texture.
If you’d like to personalize the drinkware, you can engrave initials or designs into the coconut shell using a wood-burning tool.
6. Seal the Coconut:
Apply a food-safe sealer to protect the coconut from moisture and stains. This is particularly important if you plan to use it with hot or cold beverages. Ensure the sealer is non-toxic and safe for contact with food and drink.
7. Add the Final Touches:
Drill a hole at the top if you want to insert a straw. Bamboo or stainless steel straws work well with coconut drinkware.
Rub the inside of the coconut with a small amount of natural oil (like coconut or olive oil) to enhance the texture and finish.
8. Clean and Maintain:
Hand-wash your coconut drinkware after each use. Avoid using harsh chemicals. Let it dry completely before storing. Periodically apply coconut oil to maintain the natural finish and prevent drying out.
Additional Tips:
Sourcing the Coconut: If you don’t have access to fresh coconuts, consider buying coconut shells from local craft shops or online sources that specialize in natural materials.
Decorating Ideas: You can use natural fibers, beads, or shells to add extra texture and color to your coconut drinkware, giving it a more tropical and unique look.
This process is not only fun and sustainable but results in one-of-a-kind, eco-friendly drinkware that’s perfect for a rustic or tropical vibe!
